海洋ごみ問題は、海のそばに暮らす人だけの問題ではありません。潮の流れで世界中を巡り、やがて私たちの生活や環境に長く影響を残します。buøy（ブイ）は、そんな海洋プラスチックごみの現実を“遠い出来事”のままにせず、だれもが自分の暮らしの中で関われる形に変えていくためのアップサイクルブランドです。

buøyの製品は、日本各地30以上のビーチクリーン団体の皆さまと連携し、回収された海洋プラスチックごみを有償で買い取るところから生まれています。ビーチクリーンの現場には課題がいくつもあり、善意だけに頼った活動にはどうしても限界があります。だからbuøyは、拾い集められた海洋プラスチックに付加価値をつけ、製品として届けることで利益を生み、その利益が再び回収活動や地域の力になる——そんな循環を大切にしています。そしてこうした仕組みを育てることが、海をきれいにする活動を一過性ではなく持続可能な取り組みにしていくと信じています。

その循環を支える素材は、海岸で回収されたプラスチックそのものです。着色料やバージン材料は加えず、海岸に漂着したプラスチックを100％原材料として成形しています。そのため、色や模様はすべて偶然が生み出した一点ものです。地域ごとに回収されるプラスチックの種類や色分け方法が異なるため、同じ製品でも表情はひとつとして同じになりません。また、手に取っていただく製品の重さは、回収された海ごみの重さでもあります。日々使う中で、その“重み”を体感し海の現状に思いを巡らせるきっかけになればと願っています。

またbuøyは、製品をつくる過程の透明性も大切にしています。製品には回収地域をひとつひとつ明記し、シールのQRコードから回収団体の紹介ページをご覧いただけるようにしています。どこで、誰が、どんな思いで拾い集めた素材なのか。背景を知ることで、製品は単なるモノではなく、海と人の営みをつなぐ“物語の入口”になります。

海洋ごみ問題は、漂着地域だけで解決できるものではありません。海はひとつにつながっていて、遠くの海岸で起きていることは、巡り巡って私たちの暮らしにも返ってきます。buøyは、海のない地域に暮らす人や、漂着量の少ない地域に暮らす人にも、より現実味をもってこの問題に触れ、関われるように「知る支援」「買う支援」という形で参加できる循環を広げていきます。

そして、私たちが目指すのは“捨てられたプラスチックから捨てられないプロダクト”を生み出すこと、そしていつか、海から回収されるプラスチックが減り、buøyの製品が“つくれなくなる未来”が訪れることです。その未来が実現するまでの道のりを、つくり手だけでなく、手に取ってくださる皆さまと一緒に進めていきたいと考えています。

Ocean plastic pollution isn’t only a problem for people who live near the sea. Carried by currents, it travels around the world and eventually leaves long-lasting impacts on our lives and the environment. buøy is an upcycling brand created to bring this reality closer—not as a distant issue, but as something anyone can engage with in everyday life.

buøy products begin with ocean plastics collected across Japan. We partner with more than 30 beach-cleanup organizations nationwide and purchase the recovered plastic for a fair price. Beach cleanups face many challenges, and there are limits to what can be sustained by goodwill alone. That’s why buøy adds value to what has been picked up, turns it into products, and generates profit that can flow back into cleanup efforts and local communities. We believe nurturing this kind of circular system is what makes keeping the ocean clean a long-term, sustainable effort—not a one-time action.

The material that supports this cycle is the plastic itself, collected from beaches. We do not add colorants or virgin materials; each product is molded from 100% recovered ocean plastic. As a result, every piece has a one-of-a-kind pattern created by chance. The types of plastic and the way they are sorted differ from region to region, so no two products ever look the same. The weight you hold in your hands is also the weight of the ocean litter that was collected. We hope you can feel that “weight” in daily use and let it become a moment to reflect on what is happening to our seas.

Transparency is also central to buøy. Each product clearly states the collection area, and a QR code on the label links to a page introducing the cleanup organization. Where was it collected, by whom, and with what kind of dedication? Knowing the story behind the material turns the product into more than an object—it becomes an entry point into the relationship between the ocean and the people who care for it.

Ocean plastic pollution cannot be solved only in the places where it washes ashore. The ocean is one connected system, and what happens on distant beaches eventually comes back to our own lives. buøy is working to expand a cycle that allows people—especially those who live far from the sea or in areas with less visible litter—to engage in realistic ways through “support by learning” and “support by purchasing.”

Ultimately, our goal is to create products that people won’t want to throw away—from plastic that was once thrown away—and, one day, to reach a future where there is less plastic to collect and buøy products can no longer be made.
